Do you like going to farmers’ markets? Our friend Janine MacLachlan definitely does (to the extreme). She visited markets all over Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and our beloved Wisconsin! She was so thorough, she even squeezed in a visit to our favorite place to shop on Saturdays, the Mineral Point Farmers’ Market. After all of the exploring, tasting, and meeting the people that grow the best food in the Midwest, she compiled her adventures into a book called “Farmers’ Markets of the Heartland“. I’m planning on re-reading it this winter and pretend to market hop with Janine. While the markets are bustling, it’s also a great book to check out new to you markets.
Janine was so generous to offer a free book to giveaway to one lucky Driftless Appetite reader. Just leave a comment on this post with the name your favorite farmers’ market and why. The winner will be announced a week from today. Good luck!
By the way, Janine will have copies of her book available at the Kickapoo Country Fair this Saturday. Go visit with her if you’re going to be in the area.
Last Week’s Market Haul

My favorite farmers market is Green City Market in Chicago. I mostly love it for the organic apple cider donuts.
Looks like a great book! I plan to pick one up at the fair this weekend, but an extra copy to share with my foodie friend would be nice
The Dane County farmers’ market can’t be beat, I attended most Saturdays when I lived in Madison from 1985-2006, but lately I’m enjoying my local market in Menomonee Falls which is much less crowded and allows me the opportunity to spend time chatting with the farmers.
Sounds like a fun book! I guess my favorite market would be Rochester, MN–mainly because I live here, and it’s the only one I go to; but it’s a good time as well!
I agree that the Dane County fair is great–like that there is some winter activity too! Hoping one of my kids end up in college there so I have more excuse to visit!
My favorite farmers market is the Lansing City Market. I have been going since I was a child (over forty years). It was a family tradition to go to market on Saturday. I loved the smell and it was always well attended.
My favorite market is Fulton Farmer’s Market in SW Minneapolis. As a neighborhood sized market, there is just enough depth and variety of produce, meats, cheeses and finished goods that you can get what you need. At the same time, it’s an easy bike ride, parking is available close by if you drive, and people learn your name after only a few short visits.
I love the Kingsfield Farmers Market in Minneapolis. With all of the unbelievably good produce and amazing food trucks, I honestly can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday morning.
I love Market Monday in Sartell, MN! It is one of the best farmer’s markets in the area with so much variety. I wish it was more than once a week!
Congrats to I Wilkerson, you won the market book!
We will contact you shortly.
